06. Turning a Creative Idea Into a Commercial Proposition

Independent film and cultural production company

Helping develop an ambitious cultural concept into something brands and partners could understand, buy and participate in.

The challenge

1

The founders had developed a genuinely interesting idea for connecting culturally relevant creative opportunities with commercial partners.

But because the proposition didn't fit neatly into an established category, explaining it was difficult.

The challenge wasn't simply marketing the idea.

We needed to determine what the product actually was, who it created value for, why someone would buy it and how it could become repeatable without losing the creative instinct that made it exciting.

What I did

2

I worked alongside the founders to develop and pressure-test the proposition from a commercial perspective.

We explored audiences, positioning, routes to market, partnerships, the business model and how individual creative opportunities could form part of a larger recurring proposition.

My role was often to ask the deceptively simple questions:

What are we actually selling?

Who needs this?

Why is it different?

Can we repeat it?

And what should we deliberately not turn it into?

What changed

3

The idea developed into a much clearer commercial proposition.

There is now stronger thinking around the product, audience, commercial value and how the model could grow beyond individual projects.

Most importantly, greater commercial clarity hasn't required making the creative idea more conventional.

“Sue has a knack for taking something creatively complex and finding the commercial clarity within it without simplifying away what made the idea exciting. She challenges our assumptions, asks the questions we sometimes avoid and has become an incredibly valuable strategic partner.”
