Building a Stronger Business Behind a Brilliant Mission

Women's football and culture-led organisation

Helping a purpose-led organisation strengthen how it operates, establish clear commercial priorities and build a realistic 12-month plan for sustainable growth.

The challenge

1

The organisation had built something distinctive in women's football, with a strong identity, an engaged community and ambitious plans for the future.

But delivering on that ambition required more than great ideas, energy and commitment.

Like many growing, purpose-led organisations, it needed to balance the demands of running the business today with planning for what came next. With limited time and resources, there were important decisions to make about priorities, income, costs, capacity and how the team worked together.

The challenge was to create greater commercial and operational clarity, making sure the organisation had the foundations to deliver its ambitions sustainably.

What I did

2

I worked with the leadership team to take a step back from day-to-day activity and look at the organisation as a whole.

We reviewed how the business was operating, where time and resources were being spent, how commercial decisions were being made and which opportunities offered the greatest potential.

The work focused on:

  • Commercial health: understanding the financial position, income opportunities, cost base and what sustainable growth would require.

  • Strategic priorities: identifying what mattered most over the next 12 months, including what to focus on, what to pause and where to invest effort.

  • Ways of working: reviewing responsibilities, decision-making and the processes needed to help the team operate more effectively.

  • Capacity and resources: aligning ambitions with the people, time and budget available to deliver them.

  • 12-month planning: translating the strategy into a practical roadmap with clear priorities, milestones, ownership and measures of success.

Rather than producing an ambitious strategy that would sit in a document, the focus was on creating a plan the organisation could genuinely deliver.

What changed

3

The organisation moved from managing competing opportunities and immediate demands towards a clearer, more structured plan for the year ahead.

Leadership gained a shared understanding of the commercial priorities, the operational improvements needed and the decisions required to build a more sustainable organisation.

The 12-month plan connected ambition to the practical realities of income, costs, capacity and delivery, giving the team a framework for making decisions and tracking progress.

Most importantly, the work helped shift the conversation from “how do we do everything we want to do?” to “what do we need to get right to build an organisation that can keep doing brilliant things?”

The result was a clearer direction, stronger operating foundations and a more realistic route towards long-term sustainability.
